What are the Online Industry Codes?

📱 What are the Online Industry Codes?

The Online Safety Act started on 23 January 2022. The Act says that parts of the online world, like social media, messaging apps, and search engines, need to follow Online Industry Codes. The Codes are required to be developed by industry bodies and are meant to help stop harmful and unsafe content from spreading online.

The eSafety Commissioner registers these Codes if they meet the statutory requirements. If a Code doesn’t meet the rules, then the eSafety Commission can create a Standard, to keep that part of the online world safe.

These Codes and Standards apply to many parts of the online world. This includes social media, messaging services, search engines, app stores, internet providers, and even the companies that make or fix devices used to go online.

If you want to learn more or read the full codes and standards, you can visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website.
